Eid Homecoming 2026: Overflow Markets and Extreme Weather in Focus
JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Minister of Transport Dudy Purwagandhi has affirmed that safety and security are paramount priorities in organising the 2026 Eid transport operations. He stressed that this annual tradition must not lead to complacency, as accident and security risks must be anticipated through measured and consistent measures.
“Although this is our annual tradition, perhaps you have been organising Eid transport for many years. However, I hope that even small matters should receive attention and we should not overlook minor issues,” said Dudy in an official statement on Thursday (26 February 2026).
One primary concern is the potential for traffic congestion on main arterial routes caused by overflow markets, requiring early preventive action. Based on mapping by the Transport Ministry, at least 56 locations require attention: 4 in Banten, 25 in West Java, 12 in Central Java, 6 in Yogyakarta, and 9 in East Java.
Beyond congestion, field uncertainties are also a significant concern. Extreme weather and potential natural disasters could disrupt transport operations at any time. Consequently, all stakeholders have been urged to increase vigilance and prepare mitigation scenarios.
“Lastly, we must always expect uncertainty and irregularities. Extreme weather and natural disasters that can occur at any time have the potential to cause transport disruptions,” Dudy stated.
