Eid Holiday Boosts Mobility, Train Passengers Reach 48.14 Million in March 2026
JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a surge in public mobility in March 2026 during the Eid al-Fitr period. Increases occurred across nearly all modes of transport.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono stated that the number of train passengers was the highest. The figure reached 48.14 million people, up 17.76% from March 2025.
“During March 2026, the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, the number of passenger departures across all modes of transport increased,” Ateng said in a BPS release at the BPS Central Office on Monday (4/5/2026).
International air transport recorded 1.54 million passengers, up 8.14%. The highest surge occurred in ferry crossings with 7.06 million passengers, up 72.73%.
Freight transport performance also improved. Domestic sea transport carried 43.24 million tonnes of goods, up 2.92%. Rail freight carried 5.84 million tonnes of goods, growing 0.99%.
Domestic air transport recorded a decline. Cargo volume was 53,000 tonnes, down 15.74% from the previous year.
The tourism sector also strengthened. Foreign tourist visits reached 1.09 million, up 10.50% in March 2026.
The number of visits from January to March reached 3.44 million, growing 8.62%. Tourists from Malaysia dominated with 186,530 visits. Australia followed with 130,720. Singapore reached 102,820 visits.
Total trips from January to March reached 319.51 million, up 13.14% from the same period last year.
