Eid al-Fitr Sees Celery Leaf Prices in Bangka Soar to Rp350,000 per Kilogram
The price of celery leaves, known locally as daun sop, has sharply increased to Rp350,000 per kilogram over the past week. This vegetable, belonging to the leafy greens category, is in high demand among residents for use in soups, meatballs, tekwan, and other broth-based dishes. It is no surprise that demand for daun sop or celery has surged dramatically leading up to Eid and through the fourth day of the festivities. Rahmat, one of the vegetable traders, stated that the price surge for daun sop began a week before Eid and continues to the present. “Before Eid, the price of daun sop reached Rp40,000 per ounce, or about Rp400,000 per kilogram. However, on H+2 Eid, it dropped to Rp35,000 per ounce or Rp350,000 per kilogram,” said Rahmat. According to him, this price increase is due to high demand coupled with very limited stock. “Daun sop is hard to come by because not many people grow it, so the stock is minimal, while demand is high,” he explained. He mentioned that during Eid, daun sop, as a vegetable, is essential for mixing into all Eid broth-based menus, especially soups, meatballs, and tekwan. Despite the high demand during Eid, the public only buys daun sop by the ounce. “Rarely do people buy by the kilogram; on average, it’s per ounce,” he said.
