The government, along with toll road operators, is preparing several anticipatory measures to handle the surge in vehicles during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return flows in 2026. In addition to traffic engineering such as contraflow and one-way systems, several functional toll road sections are being readied to help ease congestion on main routes.

The President Director of PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, Rivan Achmad Purwantono, stated that his company has prepared various scenarios to ensure smooth travel for the public during the homecoming period.

According to Rivan, the Jasa Marga-managed toll road network spanning 1,294 kilometres will serve as the primary route for millions of homecoming vehicles.

“We estimate that three and a half million vehicles will pass out of Jakarta,” said Rivan on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He explained that vehicle movement projections are now monitored using digital-based traffic technology. This technology allows toll road operators to predict congestion more accurately.

The systems used include intelligent transportation systems equipped with cameras featuring intelligent traffic analysis and traffic monitoring radar.

“The estimates are not only accurate in terms of numbers but also predictions at every time interval,” he clarified.

Two Waves of Homecoming Peaks

Based on preliminary monitoring, the peak of this year’s Eid homecoming traffic is expected to occur in two waves. Rivan mentioned that the first wave is predicted for 14 March, while the second wave is on 18 March. The majority of vehicles are expected to head towards the eastern route or the Trans-Java corridor.

“Today (18 March) is estimated to reach 256,000 LHR (daily traffic), and last night it was proven at 221,000, which is the highest since 13 March,” he said.

This data also shows that around 50 percent of homecoming vehicles are moving towards the eastern direction of Java Island.

Functional Toll Roads

To help alleviate traffic congestion, the government is preparing several functional toll road sections that can be used on a limited basis during the Eid homecoming and return periods.

One of them is the Jakarta-Cikampek 2 South Toll Road. This section is prepared mainly for the return flow from Bandung towards Jakarta. The toll road has a length of about 50 kilometres, stretching from Sadang to Setu.
