Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism has stated that the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday has boosted tourism travel and helped stimulate the national economy.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa, during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (1 April), cited data from the Ministry of Transportation showing that the number of people travelling during the Eid transportation period from 13 to 29 March 2026 reached 147.55 million, an increase of 2.53% compared to the initial projection.

“Approximately 12%, or around 17.27 million people, took advantage of this year’s Eid momentum to travel to tourist destinations. This is an increase of 6.3% compared to last year,” she said, as quoted in the ministry’s press release confirmed on Thursday.

“However, this is an estimate; real data will await BPS figures, as we are collaborating with BPS to calculate the number of domestic and international tourists,” she added.

Popular tourist spots during the 2026 Eid holiday included the Malioboro area in Yogyakarta, as well as the Ancol, Monas, and Ragunan Zoological Garden areas in Jakarta.

The Old City of Semarang, Masjid Al Jabar in Bandung, Pangandaran Beach, the Great Mosque of Demak, Sarangan Lake in Magetan, and Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor were also visited by many tourists during that period.

“With the increase in tourism travellers, total expenditure in the tourism sector rose from around Rp11.04 trillion in 2025 to Rp19.86 trillion in 2026,” said Ni Luh.

“This indicates a shift from household-based consumption to experience-based consumption, particularly in the tourism sector,” she added.

During that period, the ministry recorded 6.66 million passenger movements to 10 priority tourism destinations, a 13.74% increase compared to the 2025 Eid period.

Priority tourism destinations include Lake Toba (North Sumatra), Borobudur Temple (Central Java), Mandalika (West Nusa Tenggara), Likupang (North Sulawesi), Wakatobi (South Sulawesi), Raja Ampat (Southwest Papua), Labuan Bajo (East Nusa Tenggara), Morotai (North Maluku), Tanjung Kalayang (Bangka Belitung), and Bromo-Tengger-Semeru (East Java).

Passenger movements to three regenerative tourism destinations during the 2026 Eid holiday reached 6.1 million, a 24.63% increase compared to the 2025 Eid period.

Regenerative or strengthening priority tourism destinations include Bali, Greater Jakarta, and the Riau Islands.

“The largest increase occurred in Raja Ampat DPP by 19.9% and the Riau Islands by 125.5% for DPR,” said Ni Luh.

The estimated total public expenditure on priority and regenerative tourism destinations, according to ministry data, reached more than Rp12.27 trillion, reflecting a contribution of about 61.8% of the total estimated national expenditure in the tourism sector.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism stated that the government is striving to improve tourism services during the 2026 Eid holiday period.

The Ministry of Tourism activated the integrated information service platform Halo Wonderful, organised the Proud to Travel in Indonesia (BBWI) Exhibition, and promoted the BBWI campaign and Shop in Indonesia Only (BINA).

Additionally, the ministry compiled Eid holiday travel packages, encouraged reductions in transportation service ticket prices, monitored 173 tourist attraction points, and issued a circular on organising safe, comfortable, and enjoyable tourism activities.

The Ministry of Tourism also monitored tourism service issues such as illegal levies and handled them together with local governments, law enforcement agencies, and destination managers.
