Eid al-Adha to be Celebrated Simultaneously Across Indonesia, Says Religious Affairs Minister: A Moment to Strengthen Unity
Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri will be celebrated simultaneously on Wednesday, 27th May 2026. The government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, has determined that the beginning of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri will fall on Monday, 18th May 2026. Consequently, the 10th of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, or Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri, will be observed on Wednesday, 27th May 2026.
This decision was made during an isbat (confirmation) meeting held on Sunday afternoon, 17th May 2026, which coincided with the 29th of Zulkaidah 1447 Hijri. Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, stated that Eid al-Adha is more than just a religious observance.
“The government hopes that this decision will serve as a guide for all Muslims in Indonesia to begin the series of Zulhijah rituals, including the Sunnah fasts of Tarwiyah and Arafah, Eid al-Adha, and the sacrificial offerings, simultaneously,” said Nasaruddin during a press conference following the isbat meeting at the Ministry of Religious Affairs office in Jakarta on Sunday, 17th May 2026.
Nasaruddin expressed hope that this simultaneous celebration of Eid al-Adha will serve as a moment to strengthen national unity and Islamic brotherhood.
During the event, Nasaruddin explained that the determination of the beginning of Zulhijah was based on the results of lunar observations conducted at 88 strategic locations throughout Indonesia. He further elaborated that this determination was made by integrating hisab (astronomical calculations) data and the results of rukyatul hilal (lunar sighting).
The results showed that the position of the crescent moon met the criteria set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS), which serves as the primary reference for determining the beginning of Hijri months in Southeast Asia.
According to Nasaruddin, the data on the position of the crescent moon throughout Indonesia, based on hisab calculations today, indicates that its altitude above the horizon ranges from 3 degrees 17 minutes 33 seconds to 6 degrees 56 minutes 58 seconds. Meanwhile, the angle of elongation ranges from 8 degrees 54 minutes 49 seconds to 10 degrees 37 minutes 7 seconds.
Muhammadiyah had previously issued a definitive determination regarding Eid al-Adha 2026. Based on Notice Number 2/MLM/I.0/E/2025 from the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership concerning the Determination of Results for Ramadan, Shawwal, and Zulhijah 1447 H, Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri will fall on Wednesday, 27th May 2026. This determination was made using the hisab method developed by the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid, employing the principles of the Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT). Therefore, the date of Eid al-Adha 2026 according to Muhammadiyah is final and will not change.
