Eid al-Adha Takbir 2026: Timing, Recitation and Guidelines Explained
Takbir is a recommended Islamic practice to celebrate Eid al-Adha, prompting public interest in its timing, recitations, and procedures. According to the Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) on National Holidays and Shared Leave Days 2026, Eid al-Adha 1447 AH falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Thus, Takbir begins at sunset on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Citing the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs website, Takbir can be recited from the night of Eid al-Adha until the completion of the Eid prayer. For Muslims not performing Hajj, scholars recommend increasing takbir during the Days of Tashriq until 13 Dhu al-Hijjah, Saturday, 30 May 2026.
The takbir recitation praises Allah. The Arabic text is: اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلّٰهِ الْحَمْدُ. The Latin transliteration is: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Laa ilaaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar. Allahu akbar walillaahil hamd. Translation: ‘Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest. There is no deity but Allah, and Allah is Greatest. Allah is Greatest and all praise is due to Him.’
Takbir can be performed in mosques, musallas, homes, or communities while maintaining solemnity and order. Guidelines include starting after sunset on Eid eve, performing individually or in congregation, and continuing until before the Eid prayer. The public is advised to maintain order and safety, with increased remembrance and supplication during the night of Eid al-Adha.
