Eid al-Adha Prayer in Garung, Wonosobo to Host 7,000 Worshippers
WONOSOBO — Eid al-Adha prayers in the mountainous region of Butuh Village, Kalikajar District, Wonosobo Regency continue to attract worshippers from various regions.
This year’s Eid al-Adha prayer is scheduled for Wednesday, 27 May 2026, at Garung Field in Garung Hamlet, nestled at the foot of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing.
The location has gained widespread recognition in recent years for offering a communal prayer experience set against open mountain scenery.
Organisers say this year’s preparations are largely similar to previous years, but the expected number of attendees remains a key concern due to growing enthusiasm.
Butuh Village Head Dzikroni stated that the main area at Garung Field can accommodate approximately 7,000 people, based on the field’s size and planned prayer rows.
However, last year’s turnout far exceeded the field’s capacity, with worshippers reaching four times the estimated limit.
‘Last year’s Eid al-Adha drew around 30,000 people,’ Dzikroni said during preparations on Monday, 25 May 2026.
To manage the crowds, organisers have prepared an expansion plan extending prayer areas onto surrounding roads. If needed, prayer rows will stretch 500–600 metres beyond the main field, using the road in front of the venue.
Organisers also ensure arrangements prevent disruption to local agricultural land.
‘It doesn’t damage the fields, but people do enter farmers’ plots because there’s not enough space,’ Dzikroni explained.
Beyond religious purposes, the Eid al-Adha event in Butuh Village has evolved into a religious and natural tourism attraction. Many visitors arrive early to stay overnight and enjoy Wonosobo’s highland atmosphere.
For those seeking commercial accommodation, around four paid guesthouses are available near Garung, typically booked well in advance.
Organisers note attendees come from across Indonesia, including Kalimantan and Sulawesi, and increasingly from overseas.
Visitors are advised to arrive early, bring warm clothing due to chilly mountain mornings, and respect local customs and environmental cleanliness.
With the blend of worship, mountain air, and natural scenery of two peaks, Eid al-Adha at Garung Field is expected to be one of Wonosobo’s most crowded religious events this year.
