Eid al-Adha 2026: Prayer Timing and Guidance
In addition to knowing the timing, Muslims must understand the correct procedures for Eid al-Adha prayer, from the intention (niat) to the sequence of movements, to ensure the worship adheres to Islamic guidelines.
Eid al-Adha Prayer Timing 2026
According to fiqh explanations cited from various Islamic sources and scholars, Eid al-Adha prayer is performed after sunrise and when the sun has risen to the height of a spear. This is estimated to be 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise or during the duha time.
In Indonesia, Eid al-Adha prayer typically begins between 6:00 and 7:30 AM local time, adjusted to sunrise in each region. According to MUI (Indonesian Ulema Council), the prayer should be conducted once the sun is sufficiently bright and congregants have gathered.
Intention (Niat) for Eid al-Adha Prayer
Eid al-Adha prayer is a sunnah prayer consisting of two rak’ahs, preferably performed in congregation. Before starting, worshippers must recite the intention based on their role as imam or follower.
As a follower (makmum):
Arabic: نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ سُنَّةً لِعِيْدِ الْأَضْحَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ مَأْمُوْمًا لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى
Latin: Nawaitu an usholliya sunnatan li’idil adha rak’ataini ma’muman lillaahi ta’aalaa.
Translation: “I intend to perform the sunnah Eid al-Adha prayer of two rak’ahs as a follower for Allah Almighty.”
As an imam:
Arabic: نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ سُنَّةً لِعِيْدِ الْأَضْحَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِمَامًا لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى
Latin: Nawaitu an usholliya sunnatan li’idil adha rak’ataini imaaman lillaahi ta’aalaa.
Translation: “I intend to perform the sunnah Eid al-Adha prayer of two rak’ahs as an imam for Allah Almighty.”
Eid al-Adha Prayer Procedure
As per BAZNAS (National Zakat Agency) guidelines and prayer instructions, Eid al-Adha prayer consists of two rak’ahs with additional takbirs in both rakahs. After the prayer, a khutbah (sermon) is usually delivered.
Steps for Eid al-Adha prayer:
Intend to perform the Eid al-Adha prayer.
Begin with takbiratul ihram.
Recite the opening supplication (dua iftitah).
Recite seven additional takbirs in the first rak’ah.
Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and a short surah.
Perform rukuk (bowing), i’tidal (rising from bowing), sujud (prostration), sitting between prostrations, then stand for the second rak’ah.
In the second rak’ah, recite five additional takbirs.
Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and a short surah.
Complete the second rak’ah with salam (peace greeting).
Listen to the Eid al-Adha khutbah.
It is recommended to perform Eid al-Adha prayer early to allow sufficient time for the community to carry out animal sacrifices after the prayer concludes.
