Egypt’s President Rejects Constitutional Change to Extend His Term
Istanbul (ANTARA) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has reiterated that his term will end in 2030 and that the country’s constitution will not be amended to extend his presidency, the state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported on Saturday.
“2030 will mark the end of my term as president. This matter has been fully decided,” Sisi said at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy, located in the New Administrative Capital.
Sisi said Egypt’s constitution “will not be tampered with” and stressed the importance of preventing violations of constitutional and democratic principles.
He said the constitution sets out the armed forces’ role in protecting the constitutional order, democracy and the country’s fundamental pillars.
“I will not leave the Egyptian state before it is filled with its own people who are capable of shouldering responsibility,” he said. He added that a new generation of leaders was being prepared through the Egyptian Military Academy.
Egypt ready to defend Saudi Arabia
Sisi also said Egypt was ready to take any steps requested by Saudi Arabia to protect the kingdom’s security and sovereignty.
“We will take any steps to protect Saudi Arabia,” he said. He added that he would ask parliament to convene an emergency session to approve such action if Saudi Arabia requested it.
“We stand firm in protecting and defending the territory of our brothers in the Gulf region,” he said.
