Egyptian Cleric: Islam Teaches Kindness, Even Towards Those Who Have Wronged Us
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CAIRO— Sheikh Khalid Al-Jundi, a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Egypt, affirmed that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are built upon the principles of compassion and forgiveness.
He quoted a hadith that tells the story of a man who complained to the Prophet ﷺ about his servant who often made mistakes and behaved badly. The man asked for permission to punish him.
It was narrated to us [Adam bin Abi Iyas] narrated to us [Shu’bah] narrated to us [Washil Al Ahdab] said: I heard [Al Ma’rur bin Suwaid] said, “I once saw Abu Dzar Al Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, wearing the same clothes (uniform) as his young servant, so we asked him about it. He said,”I once insulted a man, so he complained to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, “Did you insult him because of his mother?” Then he said, “Indeed, your brothers are those under your control, Allah has made them under your control, so whoever has a brother under his control should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and do not burden them with what they cannot bear. If you burden them with what they cannot bear, then help them.” (HR Bukhari Muslim)
In the program “La’allahum Yafqahun” broadcast on the DMC channel, quoted from Masrawy.com, Thursday (June 4, 2026), Al-Jundi explained that the Prophet ﷺ actually directed the man to forgive and be tolerant.
According to him, this shows the strong value of gentleness and the prohibition of using violence in Islamic teachings.
He added that this meaning is emphasized in a number of hadith narrations that discuss the event.
Al-Jundi also affirmed that Islam teaches resolving mistakes with wisdom and gradually, not through violence or actions that harm.
Therefore, understanding the texts of Sharia must be done comprehensively, both from the linguistic and legal context, while still paying attention to the objectives of Sharia and the general spirit of Islamic teachings.
