Cairo (ANTARA) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stated on Monday (5/10) that Egypt will defend its rights to the Nile River waters by all means permitted under international law.

In a speech marking the 53rd anniversary of the October 1973 War between Egypt and Israel, al-Sisi described the Nile River as the “lifeblood of Egypt and the foundation of its existence for thousands of years.”

He emphasised that Egypt’s share of the water is a “well-established historical legal right that is non-negotiable, and cannot be compromised or violated.”

Al-Sisi stated that Egypt will not tolerate any actions that threaten its water security.

This statement once again highlights the dispute between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was inaugurated in September 2025. Ethiopia has stated that the dam aims to generate electricity and support development.

Egypt and Sudan have raised concerns regarding its impact on downstream water flow and have called for a binding agreement regarding the filling and operation of the dam.

Regarding the issue of Palestine, the Egyptian President reaffirmed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, remains the only viable path to achieving a just and lasting peace, as well as sustainable stability throughout the Middle East.
