Egypt Offers Assistance for Indonesia's New Capital Development

Egypt is ready to offer the experience and expertise it gained during the construction of its new administrative capital to Indonesia, which is continuing to develop Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN).

Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia Yasser Hassan Farag Elshemy stated that the Egyptian government is prepared to share technical knowledge to support the completion of Indonesia’s new capital project. “We are ready to transfer all our technical knowledge and expertise to help our brothers in Indonesia complete the construction of the new capital,” Elshemy said during the celebration of the 74th National Day of the Republic of Egypt in South Jakarta, quoted on Thursday (24/6/2026).

Elshemy noted that Egypt has already built its New Administrative Capital, now known as The New Capital. The futuristic project, valued at US$58 billion, is located approximately 45 kilometres east of Cairo and built on an area of about 71,400 hectares. Designed to reduce congestion in Cairo while serving as the country’s administrative centre, the project took around 10 years to complete. The New Capital now functions as an administrative capital separate from Cairo, which remains the nation’s historical and political capital.

According to Elshemy, Egypt and Indonesia have already established communication regarding the development of IKN. Two months ago, Egypt received an Indonesian delegation led by Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Basuki Hadimuljono to discuss various experiences in city development. He explained that one of the main focuses of Egypt’s new capital construction was ensuring connectivity with Cairo. To achieve this, the Egyptian government built a 110-kilometre Monorail project linking the western part of Cairo with the new administrative capital in the east.

Beyond urban development cooperation, relations between Indonesia and Egypt are also being strengthened through a strategic partnership signed during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Egypt in April 2025. The agreement covers cooperation in the economy, trade, investment, education, defence, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
