Egypt and Spain Discuss Drone Attack on Egyptian Port

Cairo (ANTARA) - Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held a telephone conversation on Thursday to discuss the drone attack that occurred on Wednesday at the Port of Damietta, Egypt, alongside other regional issues.

Sisi stated that authorities are currently conducting an investigation to uncover the details of the incident, while simultaneously urging joint efforts to halt the escalation of tensions in the region, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency.

Sanchez condemned the drone attack and emphasised the vital role of the United Nations (UN) in preventing further escalation in the area, the statement noted. He also called for the achievement of a just solution to the Palestinian issue based on a two-state solution.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources reported that a fire broke out on a regasification vessel and a storage ship at the Port of Damietta on the Mediterranean coast, which was successfully extinguished shortly thereafter. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Earlier on Thursday, the Egyptian cabinet stated that preliminary investigations indicate the fire was caused by a drone attack. “No party has claimed responsibility for the incident,” the statement read.
