Eggs tossed at Aussie embassy

JAKARTA: At least 300 students tossed rotten eggs at the
Australian Embassy Tuesday in a noisy demonstration to protest
police raids on Indonesians living in Australia in the wake of
the deadly Oct. 12 bombings on Bali island.

Australian security officers armed with submachine guns and
pistols have smashed down doors and broken windows getting into
the homes of Indonesians living in Australian cities in the past
two weeks.

Nobody has been arrested for links to Jamaah Islamiyah, a
regional organization blamed for the Bali blasts.

The raids sparked outrage in Indonesia amid accusations that
Indonesians living in Australia were being unfairly targeted.

Students, some chanting "Australia is the terrorist," demanded
to meet embassy officials to air their complaints. When their
request was ignored, protesters started tossing eggs at the
heavily guarded building.

No one was arrested and the hour-long demonstration broke up
without further incident.

Indonesian politicians, including Vice President Hamzah Haz,
have said the raids could worsen relations between the two
countries and should not have been done without first notifying
the Indonesian Embassy. --AP
