Eggi Sudjana Urges Prosecutors to Detain Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa, Citing Potential Sentence Over Five Years

Jakarta – Activist Eggi Sudjana is urging the Attorney General’s Office to detain Roy Suryo and Tifauzia Tyassuma, also known as Dr Tifa, who are suspects in an alleged defamation case concerning President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) diploma. Eggi claims to have information that the prosecutors have not yet detained the pair. He stressed that the prosecutors must detain Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa because the charges they face carry a potential sentence of more than five years’ imprisonment. According to Eggi, from a legal perspective, the suspects already meet the requirements for detention. He warned that if the prosecutors fail to detain them, it would appear that the decision is based on political considerations rather than legal ones. Eggi reminded the Attorney General’s Office to uphold professional law enforcement, cautioning that a failure to detain the suspects would create a negative public perception of the Adhyaksa Corps. He suggested that political influence might be affecting the prosecutors’ objectivity. Furthermore, Eggi highlighted that the prosecutors themselves have declared the police investigation file complete, or P21, and that the police have carried out the phase two handover of suspects and evidence in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code. He questioned the logic of accepting a complete case file while simultaneously refusing to detain the suspects, suggesting the file should be returned if the prosecutors believe the requirements for detention are not met.
