Egg Prices Plummet in Magetan, BGN: SPPG to Optimise Egg Menus
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has ordered all Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) in East Java to maximise the use of eggs in the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) menus. This directive comes in the wake of plummeting prices for layer hen eggs in Magetan Regency, East Java, which led farmers to stage peaceful protests a few days ago. Deputy Head of BGN Nanik Sudaryati Deyang stated that the agency understands the farmers’ difficulties in facing high feed costs and falling egg prices. “We have instructed all SPPG in East Java to optimise the use of eggs in MBG menus, thereby helping to increase absorption of farmers’ eggs and maintain price stability at the producer level,” Nanik said in an official statement received by Kompas.com on Saturday (9/5/2026). After coordinating with BGN, Nanik noted, the Magetan Regency MBG Task Force agreed to use layer hen eggs in meals three times a week. This is an increase from the previous usage of eggs in menus twice a week. According to Nanik, this strategy is intended to raise egg prices in line with increased demand. “The MBG programme is designed not only to meet community nutrition needs but also to provide economic impacts for local businesses, including layer hen farmers,” Nanik said. According to Nanik, SPPG in Magetan have been purchasing eggs from local farmers. They do not source eggs from farmers outside the area. This policy is seen as capable of encouraging the local economy to circulate. The action was a form of protest against the plummeting egg prices, which are not in balance with production costs. The current farm-level egg price in Magetan is only Rp 22,000 to Rp 22,800 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the Reference Selling Price (HAP) at the producer level is Rp 26,500 per kilogram, and the consumer-level HAP is Rp 30,000 per kilogram. Not only staging protests, the farmers also stormed the Magetan Livestock Department. In addition to complaining about selling prices below their production cost (HPP), they also complained about the absorption by the MBG kitchen. According to them, SPPG in Magetan has only absorbed 60 percent of farmers’ production. “If this is not addressed soon, stocks will pile up even more, and prices could fall further,” said one farmer, Teguh Wahyudi, after mediation at the Magetan Livestock Department on Tuesday (6/5/2026).
