Egg Prices in Indonesia Show Stark Disparity, Papua Sees 110% Surge Above Ceiling

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has highlighted a downward trend in the price of purebred chicken eggs across the majority of Indonesia during the third week of July 2026. Nevertheless, several regions still recorded price increases for the commodity.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that 72.50% of Indonesian regions experienced a decline in the Price Development Index (IPH) for purebred chicken eggs in the third week of July 2026. The number of districts/cities experiencing an IPH increase also continued to shrink, from 22 regions in the second week to just 20 regions in the third week of July 2026.

“Purebred chicken eggs have continued to decline every week since March 2026. The current price is Rp29,158 per kg, below the HAP (reference sales price). The HAP is Rp30,000 per kg, representing a decrease of 3.49 percent. There are 72.50 percent of districts/cities experiencing a decline, with the number now standing at 20 districts/cities,” Ateng said during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting on Monday (20/7/2026).

Although the majority of regions experienced price decreases, Ateng noted that several areas still recorded price increases for purebred chicken eggs. “There are several districts/cities with quite high prices, namely Mahakam Ulu Regency, which is 93 percent above the HAP. Then Dogiyai Regency is 50 percent above the HAP, and Mappi Regency is even 110 percent above the HAP,” he stated.

Based on the BPS presentation, the lowest prices were recorded in Bantaeng Regency at Rp23,883 per kg, or 20.39% below the HAP, followed by Tanjung Jabung Barat at Rp28,800 per kg (4% below HAP), Malaka at Rp29,167 per kg (2.78% below HAP), Aceh Tenggara at Rp29,600 per kg (1.33% below HAP), Lingga at Rp29,622 per kg (1.26% below HAP), and Agam at Rp29,800 per kg (0.67% below HAP). Meanwhile, the price of eggs in East Flores Regency was recorded as having returned to the HAP.

On the other hand, 20 districts/cities still experienced an increase in the IPH for purebred chicken eggs. The highest price surge occurred in Mahakam Ulu Regency, reaching Rp58,000 per kg or 93.33% above the HAP, followed by Mappi Regency at Rp63,000 per kg (110% above HAP), Dogiyai Regency at Rp45,000 per kg (50% above HAP), Supiori Regency at Rp44,000 per kg (46.67% above HAP), Sula Islands Regency at Rp40,000 per kg (33.33% above HAP), East Halmahera Regency at Rp38,167 per kg (27.22% above HAP), and Morotai Island Regency at Rp38,000 per kg (26.67% above HAP). Increases were also recorded in South Buton, South Buru, Paser, Siau Tagulandang Biaro, East Flores, Raja Ampat, and several other regions.

BPS also noted a downward trend in the price of purebred chicken meat. The national average price of purebred chicken meat in the third week of July 2026 was recorded at Rp37,523 per kg, a decrease of 1.49% compared to June 2026. Ateng reported that 56.11% of regions in Indonesia experienced a decline in the IPH for purebred chicken meat. However, 55 districts/cities saw an increase in their IPH, up from 46 districts/cities the previous week. BPS recorded the highest prices for purebred chicken meat in Intan Jaya Regency at Rp100,000 per kg, followed by Yahukimo Regency at Rp85,000 per kg, and Pegunungan Bintang Regency at Rp80,000 per kg.

Regarding conditions at the farm level, the price of live birds has begun to show an upward trend after plummeting over the past two months. However, this increase has not been entirely good news for farmers as production costs have also swelled. Meanwhile, egg prices remain sluggish and are below the basic cost of production.

Sugeng Wahyudi, Secretary General of the National Poultry Farmers Organisation (GOPAN), said that prices started to move up on Monday, 13 July 2026. “The price of live birds at the farm level is currently around Rp20,000 per kg, compared to Rp13,000 per kg in June. That means there has been an increase. The basic production cost for farmers is currently Rp20,000 to Rp22,000 per kg,” Sugeng explained.

Meanwhile, Musbar Mesdi, Chairman of the National Layer Farmers Association (APLN), said that the condition of layer farmers has not yet improved. He assessed that the low selling price of eggs is inseparable from the weakening purchasing power of the public, who are still burdened by living costs. “The selling price of our commodity is terrible because daily living costs are very heavy. The price of eggs at the farm level is Rp21,000 to Rp22,000 per kg, while the break-even point under current conditions, or the basic production cost for layers, is Rp23,000 to Rp24,000 per kg,” Musbar said.
