Egg Glut Piles Pressure on Farmers Despite Government Intervention

Layer chicken farmers are harvesting eggs at a poultry centre in Kalisidi Village, West Ungaran, Semarang Regency, Central Java. The government is taking a number of steps to stabilise the price of purebred chicken eggs, which is depressed due to oversupply, by overseeing the implementation of the Purchasing Reference Price (HAP) for eggs at the farmer level of Rp26,500 per kilogram. It is also channelling corn through the Food Supply and Price Stabilisation (SPHP) programme to maintain stability in animal feed prices, and boosting the absorption of egg production through the Free Nutritious Meals Programme (MBG), with the frequency of egg distribution increased to three times a week.
