This convenience has been enthusiastically welcomed by many MSME operators. Various training and mentoring programmes have begun introducing AI as a tool to strengthen digital marketing, and many business operators have successfully improved the quality of their promotional content and expanded their market reach through this technology. However, behind this encouraging development lies a reality that requires attention. Most MSMEs still utilise AI solely for marketing activities, whereas the main business challenges often reside in the back-end operational processes. Sales may increase, but if production is inefficient, stock is uncontrolled, or operational costs continue to swell, that growth will be difficult to sustain. This is where AI should be viewed not merely as a promotional tool, but as a means to build a more efficient and sustainable business.
When discussing AI, many people immediately imagine the technology’s ability to generate images, write articles, or create social media content. Yet AI’s potential extends far beyond these functions. MSMEs that can reduce raw material waste, minimise defective products, optimise energy use, and manage inventory well are effectively applying sustainability principles. Besides reducing environmental impact, these steps also lower operational costs and increase profits. In this context, efficiency and sustainability are not two separate goals; they reinforce each other. The more efficient a business is in utilising its resources, the greater its chance of surviving in the long term. AI can accelerate this process. With more accurate analysis, business operators can produce according to market needs, reduce waste, and utilise resources more optimally. Mentoring must also be directed towards using AI to improve operational efficiency, productivity, and business sustainability. Ultimately, the future of MSMEs is not determined by how quickly they follow technological trends, but by their ability to use technology to create real value. AI is merely a tool. True value is born when technology is used to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and build a business capable of withstanding various challenges.
