JAKARTA - Budgetary efficiencies in the people’s housing programme during President Prabowo Subianto’s administration can be utilised to increase the construction of homes under the house renovation initiative. Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait, or Ara, stated that surplus funds from these efficiencies could be reallocated to meet additional housing needs for aid recipients. She made these remarks alongside Interior Minister Tito Karnavian and Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti while inspecting the implementation of the Self-Help Housing Stimulus Assistance Programme (BSPS) in Langowan Subdistrict, Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province, on Thursday (9/4/2026). During the visit, Ara examined the home of Mrs Afni, a housewife with three children deemed unfit for habitation. “We have just seen it directly and spoken with Mrs Afni. This house is very unfit for living; it has no foundation, broken windows, and a fragile, leaking roof. This house must be renovated immediately, and it is best not to occupy it temporarily during the renovation process,” Ara said. She targeted completion of the renovation within three months and requested work to begin on Monday, 13 April 2026. This programme forms part of the people’s house renovation initiative promoted by President Prabowo Subianto. Furthermore, Ara revealed that the BSPS allocation in Minahasa has increased significantly. If only 38 units in 2025, it has risen to 512 units in 2026. On that occasion, Ara, Tito, and Amalia also observed the tender or public auction process through open shop selection for purchasing building materials. This mechanism ensures transparency and budgetary efficiency. “In Mr Prabowo’s era, we open everything transparently, leading to efficiencies. The benefits will go to the BSPS recipients. If there is surplus funding, it can be reused to add necessary building materials,” Ara emphasised. According to her, this mechanism represents a change in community involvement in the people’s housing programme, making aid more targeted and maximally beneficial. “This is a transparent process to obtain the cheapest prices, so the people’s house renovation programme can be more efficient and transparent. Additionally, this programme can also improve community welfare, not only for aid recipients but also for building material suppliers,” said Amalia. Through the BSPS programme, the government hopes the public can actively participate in building decent homes and ensure aid is precisely targeted to those in need.
