Education Ministry Equips Teachers with Sign Language Quran
The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen), in collaboration with Baitul Maal Muamalat, has organised a Training of Trainers (TOT) programme on sign language Quran instruction for educators to strengthen inclusive education services. During the two-day event, participants received training in Quran teaching methods using sign language, including both theoretical reinforcement and practical teaching exercises, to expand educators’ competencies in providing more inclusive learning services for students with hearing impairments, both in educational institutions and within the community.
Mariman Darto, Expert Staff to the Minister for Talent Management, stated in Central Jakarta on Wednesday that the training is part of the ministry’s commitment to delivering inclusive education for all students. He noted that providing inclusive education services requires collaboration from various parties, which is why the ministry partnered with Baitul Maal Muamalat, the Salman Waqf Foundation, and the Directorate General of Vocational Education, Special Education, and Special Service Education to broaden access to learning tailored to the needs of those with hearing disabilities. Mariman added that the sign language Quran TOT programme will be expanded, with plans to hold similar training during the International Day of the Deaf and International Sign Language Day in partnership with the Salman ITB Mosque.
Suparto, Secretary of the Directorate General of VPKPLK, said the training is part of the implementation of Law Number 8 of 2016 concerning Persons with Disabilities, which guarantees the right of persons with disabilities to obtain inclusive education. He noted that Quranic learning is part of character building and aligns with the ‘7 Habits of Great Indonesian Children’, particularly the habit of worship. The ministry continues to push for inclusive education services through strengthening teacher competencies and cross-stakeholder collaboration, ensuring that every student, including those with hearing impairments, receives equal learning opportunities according to their needs and potential.
