The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) and the UK government, through the Chevening Scholarship Programme, have officially established a partnership to support the capacity building of Indonesia’s human resources through master’s education in the UK. The cooperation was marked by the signing of a Chevening–Kemendikdasmen partnership memorandum of understanding at the British Embassy in Jakarta. Secretary General of Kemendikdasmen Suharti stated that the partnership is part of strengthening strategic cooperation between Indonesia and the UK in the education sector, as well as an effort to produce future leaders capable of driving Indonesia’s education transformation. Through this cooperation, which is valid until the 2029–2030 academic year, Kemendikdasmen and Chevening will support Indonesian human resources to pursue master’s degrees in the UK as Chevening Scholarship recipients in study programmes related to education. She assessed that the partnership reflects a shared commitment between the Indonesian and UK governments to invest in human resource development, improve education quality, and strengthen future leadership. The programme is also expected to further strengthen the close people-to-people ties between Indonesia and the UK while deepening bilateral cooperation in the education sector. ‘At Kemendikdasmen, we are committed to realising the vision of Quality Education for All. One of the keys to achieving this vision is preparing human resources who are able to formulate policies and implement them concretely on the ground. This effort cannot be done by the government alone but requires collaboration from various parties through a spirit of universal participation,’ Suharti said. She noted that scholarship cooperation with international partners is a strategic step to broaden access to knowledge, global experience, and international networks for Indonesian education personnel. Meanwhile, UK Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Dominic Jermey said the Chevening Programme does not merely provide scholarships but also builds leadership through enhancing competence, confidence, and global networks. ‘Education is one of the most important investments a country can make for its future. We are very pleased to launch this new partnership with Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, which will open more opportunities for Indonesians to pursue master’s studies in the UK as Chevening Scholars,’ Dominic said. He noted that the collaboration is a concrete implementation of the Indonesia–UK Strategic Partnership launched earlier this year and is expected to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries. Registration for the Chevening–Kemendikdasmen Scholarship for the 2027–2028 academic year will open from 4 August to 6 October 2026. Further information on requirements and the application process can be accessed via www.chevening.org and the @UKinIndonesia social media accounts.
