Education budget questioned

I do not know what the minister of national education and his staff are thinking. I'm referring to a report in The Jakarta Post on Oct. 9, Govt urged to allocate more funds for education. It seems to me the government has turned a blind eye to the fate of the poor, as indicated by the relatively limited budget for education.

An indication of our poor education system is the rote learning that is taught to our children, even in universities. They are not encouraged to be critical and creative! When they grow up, they become slow and uncreative workers.

If we do not strive for a better education system, let alone one that is aimed at improving human resource development and mentality, while continuing to expect other nations' "mercy" and help, I am afraid our nation will lose its dignity.

Accordingly, the government should give priority to educating the people by, among other things, allocating more funds for education.
