Education and Career Access to Europe Increasingly Open for Indonesian Talent

Opportunities for young Indonesians to pursue education and develop careers in Europe are increasingly opening up. A number of collaborations between Indonesian universities and campuses in Austria and Germany are considered capable of expanding access for Indonesian students and professionals to the global job market, particularly in the health sector and other strategic fields. The partnerships encompass the development of international education programmes, academic mobility, joint research, and the alignment of graduate competencies with global industry needs. This step is part of an effort to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian human resources amid increasingly fierce international labour competition. The cooperation agreements were signed during an academic visit to Austria and Germany on 11 June 2026. The collaborations were established with IMC Krems University of Applied Sciences in Austria and bbw Hochschule University of Applied Sciences in Germany. In the health sector, the partnership with IMC Krems is directed at strengthening the development of Indonesian health workers with competencies meeting international standards. Planned programmes include the equivalence of Indonesian nursing qualifications for careers in Austria and European Union countries, joint curriculum development, student and lecturer exchanges, internship programmes, academic mobility, and collaborative research. Additionally, both institutions are committed to organising international seminars and academic forums to broaden knowledge exchange and strengthen cross-border academic networks. Meanwhile, the partnership with bbw Hochschule focuses on developing cross-disciplinary academic collaboration. Its scope includes exploring dual degree programmes, student and lecturer exchanges, international academic mobility, joint research, and various scientific activities supporting the improvement of higher education quality. Binawan University’s Vice Rector for Governance, Resources, and Strategic Partnerships, Farouk Abdullah Alwyni, stated that strengthening international partnerships is a strategy to prepare Indonesia’s young generation for future workforce needs. ‘We believe that higher education must be able to open wider access for students to learn, collaborate, and grow in a global environment. Through partnerships with IMC Krems and bbw Hochschule, Binawan University aims to provide real opportunities for Indonesian students, particularly Binawan students, to gain international experience relevant to the needs of the future job market,’ Farouk said in a statement. CEO of IMC Krems, Dr Udo Brandle, assessed that Indonesia possesses significant potential in the development of health human resources. According to him, the collaboration could serve as a foundation for a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership. ‘We see an excellent opportunity to build a long-term partnership with Binawan University. This collaboration will strengthen knowledge exchange, improve the quality of health education, and support the development of health workers ready to answer global challenges,’ said Brandle. Interim President of bbw Hochschule, Prof Dr René Brunotte, added that international cooperation is a crucial factor in creating a higher education system that is adaptive to changes and global developments. ‘International partnerships enable educational institutions to share experiences, perspectives, and best practices. We hope this collaboration can provide tangible benefits for students, lecturers, and communities in both countries,’ said Brunotte. The collaboration is expected not only to expand access to international education but also to open broader career mobility pathways for Indonesian talent. Through partnerships with educational institutions in Austria and Germany, opportunities to gain global experience while enhancing professional competence are seen as increasingly open for Indonesia’s young generation.
