Educated people go insane

BANYUMAS, Central Java: Director of the state-run Banyumas Hospital, Sutoto, disclosed a surprising fact on Friday that the majority of psychiatric patients are educated people from the middle and upper income groups.

According to Sutoto, most of the 53 patients treated at the mental hospital, went insane as they could not longer cope with the impact of the country's severe economic crisis.

Before the crisis hit the country in 1997, psychiatric patients mostly came from lower class society and their illnesses were related to hereditary factors.

"This time around, many of our patients have a high level of education and come from the middle and upper income groups," the doctor told The Jakarta Post. (45)
