Yogyakarta (ANTARA) — Emergency Disaster Reduction and Rescue (EDRR) Indonesia has received an award for its support of the Satuan Pendidikan Aman Bencana (SPAB) programme as part of the 20th anniversary commemorations of the Yogyakarta and Central Java Earthquake, opened on Friday. The award was presented at SMAN 1 Kalasan, Sleman Regency, which served as the opening item of the commemorations.

The activities, organised in collaboration with partners, provided disaster mitigation education for participants. The materials included the potential earthquake threats, rescue and evacuation procedures, reporting via the Jogja Digdaya application, and disaster response simulations.

The award was presented to several parties deemed committed to implementing the SPAB strategic programme in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, including the DIY Department of Education, Youth and Sports, the DIY BPBD (Disaster Management Agency), and EDRR Indonesia. The Country Director for Government Relations at EDRR Indonesia said the award serves as an important reminder of the need to build a safety culture starting in schools. “We accept this award as a reminder that safety must begin in the classroom. EDRR Indonesia regards the Satuan Pendidikan Aman Bencana not merely as a programme, but as a long-term investment,” said Rakyan.

The programme then continued with the opening of the Pasar Penyintas at Lapangan Garuda; the Pasar Penyintas area features 44 survivor-run UMKM from the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake as part of efforts to support economic recovery and strengthen community resilience post-disaster.

The Deputy for Coordination of Disaster and Social Conflict Management at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) said the 20th anniversary of the Yogyakarta and Central Java earthquakes provides a moment to strengthen the community’s collective memory regarding the importance of disaster preparedness through cross-sector collaboration.

Rakyan added that EDRR Indonesia’s involvement in the anniversary is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to disaster management in the archipelago.

“We will carry this spirit forward through EDRR Indonesia 2026, Southeast Asia’s largest disaster mitigation technology exhibition, which will run from 12 to 14 August 2026 at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. We invite government, the business community, and the public to make this anniversary a starting point for a tangible culture of disaster resilience,” concluded Rakyan.
