Jakarta – The name Eddy Tansil has returned to the public spotlight after the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) successfully traced and secured assets belonging to him worth Rp51.6 billion. The discovery is significant because Eddy Tansil is one of the most notorious fugitives in Indonesian history, having vanished for nearly three decades since escaping from Cipinang Penitentiary (LP) in 1996.

Although Eddy Tansil’s whereabouts remain a mystery to this day, the state has evidently still managed to locate a portion of the assets linked to the convict in the corruption case involving the embezzlement of Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo).

The success of the asset tracing was announced alongside the handover of Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) worth Rp1.029 trillion by the Attorney General’s Office to Deputy Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa on Monday, 15 June 2026.

Head of the Asset Recovery Agency (BPA) at the Attorney General’s Office, Kuntadi, revealed that the Asset Tracing Centre (PPA) successfully found funds under the name of Eddy Tansil amounting to Rp51,682,537,000.

“The PPA successfully traced assets in the name of convict Eddy Tansil in the form of money totalling Rp51,682,537,000,” Kuntadi said at the event held at the Asset Recovery Agency Office of the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta.

Eddy Tansil is a convict in a major corruption case that emerged during the New Order era. Through his company, Golden Key Group, he was proven to have embezzled credit from Bank Bapindo worth US$565 million, equivalent to approximately Rp10.1 trillion at current exchange rates.

The case became one of the largest financial scandals in Indonesian history. The Central Jakarta District Court in 1994 found Eddy Tansil guilty and handed down a criminal sentence. The verdict was subsequently upheld up to the cassation level in 1995.

In that case, Eddy Tansil was sentenced to:

  • 20 years in prison

  • A fine of Rp30 million

  • Compensation payment of Rp500 billion

  • An obligation to repay state losses amounting to Rp1.3 trillion

After being convicted, he served his detention at Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta.

However, in May 1996, Indonesia was rocked by news of Eddy Tansil’s escape from Cipinang Penitentiary. The incident became one of the most controversial prison escape cases ever to occur.
