Eddy Soeparno States Energy Transition Must Become a Development Strategy
The energy transition is not merely an option, but a necessity and a component of the national development strategy to strengthen energy security in facing the climate crisis.
This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI, Eddy Soeparno, during his keynote speech at the launch of the documentary film ‘Energy for the Nation’ at the Asrul Sani Theatre, Trisno Soemardjo Building, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta, on Tuesday (1/9/2026).
Eddy stated that this documentary film could serve as an effective medium to increase public understanding and awareness regarding the importance of transitioning from fossil fuels to Clean and Renewable Energy (EBT).
“The energy transition is a necessity for us because it can directly assist and support our programme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to improve air quality and pollution levels, in order to reduce and control the climate crisis we are currently facing,” said Eddy on Wednesday (2/9/2026).
Eddy noted several positive developments in the global energy transition. One of these is the strengthening of the energy transition as a global movement and the increasing competitiveness of renewable energy costs.
He mentioned that the price of solar panels has decreased significantly compared to ten years ago. Developments in battery technology and electric vehicles are also seen as opening opportunities to accelerate the energy transition.
However, Eddy warned that the world still faces the challenge of a ‘disorderly energy transition’. On one hand, investment in renewable energy continues to increase, but on the other hand, fossil fuel development is still occurring on a large scale.
“China is developing the highest volume of coal-fired power plants in the world. However, China is also developing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. Consequently, China is currently the country with the largest solar and wind capacity in the world,” he explained.
Eddy views the energy transition as a potential new economic opportunity for Indonesia. The development of renewable energy is considered to have the potential to create investment, green industries, and green jobs.
“This energy transition is one of our development strategies. Therefore, we must implement it, not just as a decarbonisation effort,” he said.
Eddy added that the energy transition is also in line with the constitutional mandate, specifically Article 33, Paragraph 4 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, which emphasises the principles of sustainable and environmentally conscious economic development.
“So, we are not just talking about performing an energy transition or preventing climate change or the climate crisis, but we must implement it consistently,” he remarked.
Eddy expressed hope that through the documentary film ‘Energy for the Nation’, a wider audience could be reached to encourage more people to understand the challenges and opportunities within the energy transition.
“This is one of the positive supports required so that this energy transition becomes a primary agenda for our future economic development and growth,” he concluded.
