Eddy Soeparno Praises Prabowo's Speech on Carbon Economy Development
Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has expressed appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 2026 MPR Annual Session. In his address, Prabowo gave special attention to the development of a green economy, the carbon economy, and the strengthening of carbon trading through the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) and the carbon economic value exchange.
During the Joint Annual Session of the DPR, MPR and DPD, Prabowo also emphasised that the government continues to drive the green economy through the development of a carbon economic value ecosystem. “We are also driving the green economy. The Carbon Unit Registry System and the carbon economic value exchange have been established and are operational, adopting global carbon standards,” Prabowo stated on Saturday (15/8/2026).
Eddy assessed the statement as a strong political commitment. He stressed that the carbon economy must be positioned as part of the national economic growth strategy, not merely as an instrument to achieve emission reduction targets. “I greatly appreciate the President’s attention to the carbon economy. This aligns with what I have been advocating, that the carbon economy must become one of Indonesia’s new economic pillars. Decarbonisation should be viewed broadly as an environmental issue as well as an opportunity to create investment, state revenue, jobs, and new sources of economic growth,” Eddy said.
The University of Indonesia political science doctorate holder described the presence of the SRUK as a strategic step. He noted that the system is necessary to ensure that every carbon unit traded has clear recording, verification, and traceability. “SRUK is the foundation of trust in Indonesia’s carbon market. If we want to attract investment and make carbon a credible economic commodity, then data integrity, transparency, traceability, and international standards must be the main principles,” he asserted.
Eddy added that the strengthening of the SRUK must go hand in hand with regulatory certainty, carbon project readiness, and cross-ministerial and institutional coordination. According to him, many carbon projects are already in the technical, financial, and institutional preparation stages, so Indonesia must ensure these projects have a clear pathway to carbon monetisation and integration into the national system.
Furthermore, Eddy explained that Indonesia possesses significant capital to build a carbon economy. The country’s wealth of forests, peatlands, mangroves, renewable energy potential, waste management, and technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) can all be part of a low-carbon economic ecosystem. “The President’s message today must be followed up with concrete action. With our vast carbon potential, its economic value must be utilised optimally. We must build a carbon market that is credible, competitive, and provides economic benefits for Indonesia,” he concluded.
