Eddy Soeparno: Carbon Economy Must Become Indonesia's New Growth Engine
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly from the National Mandate Party faction, Eddy Soeparno, has welcomed President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 2026 MPR Annual Session, which gave special attention to the development of the green economy, the carbon economy, and the strengthening of carbon trading through the Carbon Unit Registry System and the carbon economic value exchange.
As is known, in the session held at the Nusantara Building, Senayan Parliament Complex, on Friday (14/8/2026), Prabowo affirmed that the government continues to drive the green economy through the development of a carbon economic value ecosystem.
“We are also driving the green economy. The Carbon Unit Registry System and the carbon economic value exchange have been established and are operating by adopting world carbon standards,” said Prabowo.
“I greatly appreciate President Prabowo’s attention to the carbon economy. This is in line with what I have been pushing for, that the carbon economy must be made one of Indonesia’s new economic pillars. Decarbonisation must be viewed broadly as both an environmental issue and an opportunity to create investment, state revenue, jobs and new sources of economic growth,” said Eddy, as quoted in a press release.
In this context, the Doctor of Political Science from the University of Indonesia said the presence of the Carbon Unit Registry System is a highly strategic step. The system is needed to ensure that every carbon unit traded has clear recording, verification and traceability, thereby building market confidence.
“The Carbon Unit Registry System is the foundation of trust in Indonesia’s carbon market. If we want to attract investment and make carbon a credible economic commodity, then data integrity, transparency, traceability and international standards must be the main principles,” he stressed.
Eddy added that strengthening the Carbon Unit Registry System must go hand in hand with regulatory certainty, readiness of carbon projects, and cross-ministerial and institutional coordination. According to him, many carbon projects are already in the technical, financial and institutional preparation stages, so Indonesia must ensure these projects have a clear path towards carbon monetisation and integration into the national system.
Eddy, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the National Mandate Party Central Executive Board, explained that Indonesia has enormous capital to build a carbon economy. The wealth of forests, peatlands, mangroves, renewable energy potential, waste management, and technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage can all be part of a low-carbon economic ecosystem.
“President Prabowo’s message today must be followed up with concrete work. With great carbon potential, its economic value must be utilised as well as possible. We must build a carbon market that is credible, competitive and provides economic benefits for Indonesia,” he said.
