Quito (ANTARA) - Ecuador began enforcing a 100 percent tariff on all imports from Colombia on Friday (1 May), thereby heightening trade tensions between the two countries, according to local authorities. The policy applies to all goods originating from Colombia or shipped from that country, based on their customs value. Ecuadorian authorities stated that the measure aims to strengthen border security and customs supervision. However, exemptions are in place for strategic sectors such as oil and energy, as well as special schemes like temporary entry permits, customs transit, and re-exportation. Additionally, certain commodities, such as private tourist vehicles, are also exempted. The tariff, described as a “security surcharge,” has been gradually increased over recent months, rising from 30 percent in February to 50 percent in March. Several business groups have warned that the policy could disrupt supply chains, affect trade flows, and impact employment. Local media reported that border towns like Tulcán in Ecuador and Ipiales in Colombia are particularly vulnerable, given their dependence on cross-border trade, which transports more than 500,000 tonnes of goods annually via land routes. Analysts say the policy change adds uncertainty to bilateral relations and economic activities in the border regions.
