Economist on Perry Warjiyo's Resignation: Rupiah Remains Safe Under Destry
An economist has assessed that the resignation of Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo will not have a serious impact on Indonesia’s monetary conditions and financial system stability. Perry Warjiyo decided to step down from his position as BI Governor on 25 July 2026. Destry Damayanti will occupy the position of BI Governor on an interim basis until a definitive leader is elected.
Global Market Economist at Maybank Indonesia, Myrdal Gunarto, stated that monetary liquidity conditions remain safe and the influence on the capital market will be limited. He views Destry Damayanti as a highly capable figure, particularly in the monetary field, due to her strong background in banking and capital markets. With this background, he is confident the rupiah and monetary policy will remain under control.
“We see that Mrs Destry’s background, having previously spent a long time in banking, the market, and also at the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), means she is very complete in mastering how to handle monetary matters, including the financial sector and the market. So we see that the condition of the rupiah and our monetary situation will still be very well manageable when Mrs Destry continues the baton from Mr Perry as BI Governor,” Myrdal explained.
He also hopes that coordination between BI and the government within the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) will remain strong. Myrdal noted that coordination between BI and the government regarding inflation is already quite good, as reflected by the stable prices of strategic commodities. “Moreover, our strategic commodity prices are also relatively stable. So Indonesia’s inflation at the end of this year will also remain below 3.1%,” he continued. Regarding the rupiah, Myrdal sees the currency moving in the range of Rp 17,954 per US dollar in the short term, until the end of July.
