Trade Minister Budi Santoso fully supports the activities of songbird hobbyists. This is because, he said, the economic value of this ecosystem ranges from Rp 1.7 to Rp 2 trillion annually. In addition to the substantial domestic circulation of money, Budi stated that the export value of songbirds is also significant. In 2025 alone, he said Indonesia exported songbirds and ornamental birds worth Rp 12.5 billion. “Now, if we look at the economic value behind the songbird enthusiasts, it’s around 1.7 to 2 trillion. And last year we exported ornamental birds worth Rp 12.5 billion. So the birds are ornamental birds and they are bred,” Budi said after attending a songbird competition held in the car park of the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta, on Sunday, 3 May 2025. Budi explained that songbird hobby activities have multiple economic effects. With more people involved in this ecosystem, the impact is also felt by bird cage craftsmen, feed breeders, and the bird feed and accessory industries. To avoid disrupting the ecosystem, Budi said that songbird hobby activities do not involve capturing birds from their natural habitats. For exports specifically, he continued, the birds come from farms dedicated to the export market. “So the goal is to protect the birds’ natural habitats,” Budi said. Budi added that as a form of support for the songbird hobby ecosystem, the Ministry of Trade will routinely hold songbird competitions every year. In this way, he hopes this ecosystem will grow even larger and have an impact on the economy.
