Economic Turnover at Kupang's Saboak Sunday Market Reaches Rp 5 Billion
The economic turnover at the Sunday Market for Kupang People (Saboak) from the beginning in June 2025 until now has exceeded Rp 5 billion. This was stated by Deputy Mayor of Kupang, Serena Francis, during the opening of Peken Jasindo Kupang on Saturday night (2/5/2026).
“So during the first five months, the economic turnover was already over Rp 1 billion. Then the total overall, the last report I received was over Rp 5 billion up to today,” Serena explained.
According to her, Saboak brings hundreds of micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) in Kupang City, NTT. “Saboak every week has hundreds of UMKM that we rotate. So every week there are groups A, B, C, and D. So the economic turnover is very felt by the UMKM actors,” explained the Gerindra Party politician.
Peken Jasindo is a community and UMKM empowerment programme with the theme “Katong Baku Dukung, Katong Baku Sayang,” which reflects the values of togetherness in Kupang society.
“Since morning, Taman Nostalgia has been filled with various activities, from UMKM bazaars, 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, business development talkshows, insurance literacy, to weaving and local food workshops,” she detailed.
The community is also treated to various arts and cultural performances in the evening, including performances by disabled groups, dances, and choirs. Serena assessed that these activities serve as a strategic space to encourage UMKM to level up and strengthen the people’s economy.
Serena also exemplified the success of the Saboak programme held at Taman Nostalgia, which since its launch in June 2025 has involved hundreds of UMKM actors with an economic turnover reaching billions of rupiah.
“Previously, this area was underutilised; now it has become a centre of economic activity and a lively public space for the community,” she said.
She also appreciated the plastic-free market concept in the event as a form of environmental care.
Meanwhile, the Head of Jasindo Kupang, Jerry Simamora, said that Peken Jasindo is designed as an open space for the community to transact, learn, and collaborate.
According to Jerry, UMKM play an important role in driving the regional economy. Therefore, this activity is expected to expand market access, increase competitiveness, and encourage community economic growth.
In addition to the bazaar, the event also features various public services, such as free health services, Nomor Induk Berusaha (NIB) issuance, SIM extension, and tax payments.
“Various social programmes are also held, including workshops for people with disabilities, Posyandu services, health education, as well as assistance in the form of business facilities, UMKM equipment, educational support, and distribution of basic food packages,” Jerry emphasised.
