Ecoli polluted water in Yogyakarta

YOGYAKARTA: Recent studies on the water quality conducted in Yogyakarta revealed that most sources of drinking water here are contaminated by domestic waste, especially human feces that carry Ecoli bacteria, a research found.

The study was disclosed by Yogyakarta Water Group Study (KSAY) in commemoration of World Water Day.

"The degree of pollution in ground water was so high that people cannot drink it without boiling it first," Joko Rahardjo, a researcher, told a media briefing on Tuesday.

He did not provide the exact data of the contamination levels but said that "it exceeded the normal level."

KSAY group scientists and researchers are from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta State University, Duta Wacana Christian University, Yogyakarta Science Academy and the PDAM Yogyakarta. (swa/edt)
