Moscow (ANTARA) – The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 9,144, with 4,410 deaths, the country’s National Institute of Public Health (INSP) said.

“Over the past 24 hours, 79 new cases, 29 deaths and 29 recoveries were recorded. The total has therefore reached 9,144 cases, including 4,410 deaths since the outbreak began,” INSP said in a statement on Wednesday (14 October).

International humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said last week that the Ebola outbreak in North Kivu Province was becoming increasingly out of control.

However, laboratory data indicate that the Ervebo Ebola vaccine, sent to the Congo by the World Health Organization (WHO), may provide protection against the disease.

On 20 August, the WHO reported that it had sent 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to the Congo to protect healthcare workers and for clinical trials.
