East Timor heightens alert
DILI, East Timor: Local police chief Col. Andreas Sugianto has
said that he has prepared 1,000 security officers in anticipation
of demonstrations during the United Nations Secretary-General
Boutros Boutros-Ghali's Indonesian visit.
"We have prepared two battalions of ABRI (Armed Forces)
members in anticipation of any security disturbance," he said on
Friday.
He said anti-integration elements have reportedly planned a
rally starting from Santa Cruz cemetery to Marcado shopping
center.
He said that a house in Bairopite, Marcado, which belongs to a
member of the provincial legislative council, was vandalized by
unidentified men. (yac/imn)
