East Lombok Regent Proposes 7 New Garlic Production Centres

The East Lombok Regency Government in West Nusa Tenggara has proposed seven sub-districts as new garlic production centres in the region. The proposal is aimed at reducing Indonesia’s dependence on garlic imports.

East Lombok Regent Haerul Warisin said the potential for garlic development in his area is not limited to the Sembalun region. The proposed areas are those with a historical record as garlic producers since the past.

“We have proposed seven sub-districts, namely Pringgabaya, Suela, Sikur, Masbagik, Pringgasela, and Wanasaba. All of them have been garlic growers since long ago,” said the regent, who is familiarly known as Iron, on Wednesday afternoon (19/8/2026).

Nevertheless, Sembalun remains the main supplier, particularly in meeting the need for garlic seed. The harvest from Sembalun is focused on fulfilling the demand for quality seed for the supporting sub-districts.

“For seed and planting stock, we still expect it to come from Sembalun. We want the garlic seed originating from Sembalun to be fully absorbed to develop our farmer groups in other areas,” Iron added.

He added that seed originating from Sembalun is projected to meet national garlic demand. Iron said the government has ensured that the purchase price of seed from farmers is adjusted to market prices.

As a form of the East Lombok Regency Government’s commitment to supporting the national garlic self-sufficiency programme, it has donated an asset in the form of land to be used as a post-harvest garlic storage warehouse. The land area is approximately one hectare with a building value of Rp 5 billion.

“Later, if the National Police Chief is to build the warehouse, we only need to prepare the land. Hopefully, with this warehouse, farmers’ harvests that will become seed can be stored properly,” Iron said.
