East Java reigns supreme on national archery field
JAKARTA (JP): East Java preserved its long-time supremacy in archery at the National Games when it took two of the four gold medals at stake yesterday.
Hariyono gave East Java its first gold of the day when he scored 311 to win the men's 40m individual. West Java's Suhendrawan finished second with 306, ahead of another East Javanese, Hendra Setiawan, who scored 304.
East Java grabbed its second gold through Dwi Purwati, who triumphed in the women's 50m individual with a total score of 279. Kusumawardhani of South Sulawesi, a member of Indonesia's silver medal-winning trio in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, had to be content with the silver after she scored 276. The bronze went to Dwi Novita of Central Kalimantan, who scored 271.
Kusumawardhani made up for her 50m loss with a victory in the shorter distance event, the 40m. She topped the standings with 306 points ahead of South Kalimantan's Taufik Safarni and Sri Handayani of Central Java, who were tied at 303.
Host Jakarta clinched the 50m title through Ditto Rembrant, who won a close battle with teammate Wahyu Hidayat and East Java's Hariyono. Ditto scored 289, a mere point better than both Wahyu and Hariyono, who took the silver and bronze respectively. Wahyu was awarded the silver for scoring more 10s than Hariyono.
Water skiing
East Java also ruled the waves of Sunter lake, the venue for water skiing, by sweeping all but one medal on offer in yesterday's action.
The women's show jumping contest fully belonged to East Java. The province's best skier, Nunik Murdianti, took the gold with a leap of 24.7 meters, much farther than her teammates Baiq Herawati and Baiq Yolandasari, who jumped 19.5m and 17.32m respectively.
The only medal missing from East Java's coffer was the overall bronze. Nunik came out the overall winner with a score of 2,771, followed by teammate Herawati, who finished a distant second with 2,296. Ana Subandi of Bali denied East Java its medal sweeping attempt by scoring 1,711 for the bronze.
Wrestling
On the wrestling mat, South Kalimantan's Zulhaidir and Novrizal, who are brothers, won their respective freestyle duels yesterday to take the province's gold medal haul from the sport to three.
Zulhaidir threw down Deddy Zulkifli of East Kalimantan in their 57kg contest, while Novrizal overpowered Asep Sianturi of West Java to clinch the 68kg title.
Central Kalimantan also scooped its third gold from wrestling when Wahono triumphed in the 48kg division. The remaining two gold medals of the day went to North Sumatra's Joshua Sumirat, who was victorious in the 82kg category, and Yanca Sada of Irian Jaya, the champion in the 100kg class.
Wrestling offers 20 golds in this year's Games, 10 come in the already concluded Greco-Roman brawling style and the rest in freestyle.
Five more golds will be up for grabs in wrestling as the sport's medal race comes to an end today.
When it comes to shooting, Jakarta is beyond comparison. The host team continued its winning streak yesterday, grabbing one more gold from the women's smallbore standard rifle event to bring the tally of its golds to 14.
It was also an all-Jakartan affair, as all three medals went to home shooters. Yuniarti secured the gold with a score of 664.5, just half a point better than her runner-up, Laksmi. Aurora Maris, who won the air rifle gold in a new national mark, managed only the bronze, with 631.5. (amd)
