Madiun (ANTARA) - The East Java Provincial Government targets rice production in the region to increase by up to 5% by 2026 compared to the previous year, further solidifying the provincial government’s commitment as a sustainable national food granary.

“This increase is not only about maximising rice and paddy production in East Java, but we also want to be part of bringing Indonesia not just food security but sustainable food sovereignty,” said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa while leading the Harvest Movement and Accelerated Planting in Gading Village, Balerejo Subdistrict, Madiun Regency, on Friday.

Based on the Fixed Figures from BPS for 2025, East Java recorded a harvested area of 1.84 million hectares with rice production reaching 10.44 million tonnes of Dry Milled Grain (GKG). This figure increased by 12.60% from the previous year, which was 9.77 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, based on the BPS release dated 4 May 2026, the potential rice production for January–June 2026 is estimated at 6.62 million tonnes GKG, or an increase of around 5.28% compared to the same period last year.

“This means that East Java’s agricultural productivity continues to grow positively and resiliently amid various global challenges and climate change. Insya Allah, East Java remains the mainstay of food security,” stated Governor Khofifah.

To realise the target and sustainable food sovereignty, Governor Khofifah emphasised the importance of modernising agricultural tools and machines (alsintan) in various regions of East Java.

Modernising alsintan is a very important part, such as the use of transplanters, rotavators, drone sprayers, and Combine Harvesters.

Various strategic steps have been taken by the East Java Provincial Government to promote sustainable food sovereignty. Among them is accelerating planting on lands that have finished harvesting by utilising certified superior seeds that are drought-resistant.

Then, optimising the use of agricultural tools and machines or alsintan so that the harvesting, land processing, and replanting processes can run faster and more efficiently.

The third is compiling adaptive planting patterns based on technology and climate change mitigation, and fourth, strengthening irrigation management through pump installation, rehabilitation of tertiary irrigation networks, construction of pumping stations, and optimisation of water sources.

Further efforts include strengthening rapid reporting systems in the event of natural disasters or attacks by plant-disturbing organisms.

In line with Governor Khofifah, Acting Director General of Food Crops from the Ministry of Agriculture RI, Tin Latifah, stated that the government through the Ministry of Agriculture RI has broken down that in one year, the area of land that must be planted reaches 16 million hectares.

East Java, she mentioned, has contributed up to May 2026 reaching 238,000 hectares from the national target of 1.7 million hectares for all of Indonesia.

Referring to BPS data, where for the first semester January-June, East Java’s rice production is predicted to be 5% larger than in 2025. This is with the note that mitigation must be carried out so that what has been planted does not fail due to pests or drought.

“We are very confident that East Java Province’s production increase, as predicted at 5%, can be achieved,” said Tin Latifah.

In the rice harvesting and accelerated planting event, East Java Governor Khofifah was accompanied by Regent of Madiun Hari Wuryanto, Deputy Regent of Madiun Purnomo Hadi, along with officials from the East Java Provincial Government and Madiun Regency Government. Assistance in the form of alsintan was also handed over, namely three units of hand tractors, four units of cultivators, six units of large combine harvesters, and one unit of rotavator.

The assistance from the East Java Provincial Government was symbolically handed over by Governor Khofifah to the Sumber Rukun Farmer Group as a representative of farmers in Balerejo Subdistrict, Madiun Regency.
