Surabaya (ANTARA) - The East Java Provincial Government (Pemprov Jatim) has committed to controlling inflation and stabilising staple food prices ahead of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah through subsidised markets held at the Al-Akbar National Mosque in Surabaya.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said in a statement received in Surabaya on Monday that the subsidised market programme forms part of the provincial government's efforts to safeguard public purchasing power whilst strengthening regional food security amid rising household consumption.

"Supply is secure, stocks are secure, but the enthusiasm is driven by increased demand ahead of the holy month of Ramadan and fasting," said Khofifah.

At the event, a number of commodities were sold below market prices, including premium rice at Rp14,000 per kilogramme, medium-grade rice at Rp11,000 per kilogramme, cooking oil at Rp13,000 per litre, broiler eggs at Rp22,000 per pack, wheat flour at Rp10,000 per kilogramme, and granulated sugar at Rp14,000 per kilogramme.

Also available were garlic at Rp6,000 per 250 grammes, shallots at Rp7,000 per 250 grammes, red bird's eye chilli at Rp4,000 per 100 grammes, large red chilli at Rp2,000 per 100 grammes, and broiler chicken meat at Rp30,000 per pack.

"The market price of chicken has already reached Rp40,000 per kilogramme, whereas at this subsidised market it is priced at Rp30,000 per kilogramme. Red chilli is Rp40,000 at regular markets but Rp20,000 at this subsidised market. Meanwhile, bird's eye chilli is currently Rp80,000 per kilogramme at regular markets, but Rp40,000 per kilogramme at the subsidised market," she said.

Khofifah expressed hope that these measures would help stabilise prices during the critical period ahead of Ramadan and ensure that the public's basic needs are met. She also called on distributors and suppliers to accelerate distribution in order to maintain a balance between demand and supply.

"People typically stock up on more staple goods during Ramadan," she said.

The East Java Provincial Government has committed to intensifying market operations and subsidised markets across various regions throughout Ramadan as a strategy for controlling regional inflation and maintaining economic stability through to Eid al-Fitr.

"God willing, we will continue to maintain price stability so that the public can welcome and observe Ramadan with devotion, tranquillity, and abundant blessings," she said.
