The East Java Provincial Government is encouraging the development of a wood industry based on forest sustainability through the strengthening of forestry governance, product downstreaming, and the expansion of global market access, in order to increase competitiveness while maintaining the sustainability of forest resources.

The Head of the East Java Forestry Service, Jumadi, stated that global market demand for sustainable wood products continues to rise, presenting a significant opportunity for the national forest product industry to expand. “The world does not only require high-quality wood products, but also products that are ecologically sustainable, economically profitable, and provide social benefits to the community,” he said during the opening of the Indowood Expo 2026 in Surabaya on Thursday.

He explained that East Java is one of the largest wood processing industry hubs in Indonesia, with approximately 1,332 industrial units producing plywood, furniture, moulding, engineered wood, and various creative wood-based products for the international market. “The export value of forest products and the wood industry in East Java has reached approximately 2.5 billion US dollars, making it a vital contributor to both the regional and national economies,” he added.

Jumadi noted that the East Java Provincial Government continues to promote four strategic agendas to strengthen the competitiveness of the forest product industry: strengthening the downstreaming of forest products, enhancing sustainable forest management, expanding global market access through certification and innovation, and accelerating the development of a green economy. These efforts include the development of the Community Forest Product Administration Information System (SIPUHH-R) to support the traceability of community wood origins and to strengthen governance and sustainability certification.
