East Java Junior High School Student Dies After Alleged Assault by Classmate Over Rubbish Dispute
A trivial classroom dispute over rubbish has led to the death of a junior high school student in Lumajang, East Java. The victim, identified by the initials IL, 16, a resident of Jatisari Village, Kedungjajang District, died after allegedly being assaulted by a classmate.
The incident occurred on Monday, 18 May 2026, while students of class IC at SMP PGRI Sukodono were taking an Academic Ability Test (TKA). According to a police investigation, the altercation began when a student with the initials SKF, also known as DF, found rubbish in the desk locker belonging to the victim. The suspect asked IL to clean it up, but the victim refused, claiming he had not thrown the rubbish there. The refusal allegedly angered the suspect, who then punched the victim inside the classroom.
Lumajang Police Head of Public Relations, Second Police Inspector Suprapto, stated that investigators found the victim was punched while sitting in a chair near the classroom wall. The suspect allegedly threw three punches with a clenched right fist. The first punch hit the victim’s chest, the second struck his arm, and the third hit his lip, causing his head to slam against the wall. “He suffered a lip injury and complained of a headache after the incident,” Suprapto said on Friday, 3 July 2026.
The following day, the school held a mediation meeting attended by the headmaster, homeroom teacher, and the families of both the victim and the reported perpetrator. However, the victim’s condition continued to deteriorate. The headmaster, who regularly monitored the victim’s progress, observed that his physical state was weakening. About a week after the incident, the victim asked for leave as he continued to complain of pain at the back of his head and his lip remained swollen.
His condition worsened, and on Monday, 23 June 2026, his family took him to Dr Haryoto Regional General Hospital in Lumajang. The next day, Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at around 5 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the victim’s family reported the alleged assault to the Lumajang Police. Just hours after the report was filed, at around 9 a.m., IL was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police responded swiftly by visiting the hospital, coordinating with the school, examining several witnesses, and collecting evidence.
