The East Java Deputy Governor, Emil Elestianto Dardak, accompanied by Lamongan Regent Yuhronur Efendi, carried out a field inspection at the Kuro Floodgate on Saturday (7 March). The visit responds to residents’ concerns about the suboptimal operation of water discharge pumps in flood management for Lamongan.

Several pumps at the Sluis Kuro were shut down for several days but were reactivated after the Bengawan Solo river level rose to flood alert. During the inspection, Deputy Governor Emil said that permanent pumps have been activated until 22:00 WIB and mobile pumps until 24:00 WIB.

“There was public worry because of the noise, but residents understood; those who protested realised that this is for floods, and they were willing to accept that the noise was to help their fellow residents. We have also reviewed the Ministry of Public Works’ master plan that there is a floodway to discharge water directly into the sea, with a capacity of 640 cubic metres and, with optimisation, could reach 1,000 cubic metres,” Emil said during the inspection at the Pintu Sulis Kuro, Karangbinangun District, Lamongan.

Emil explained that today’s capacity could only reach a maximum of 400 cubic metres, so further discussion with the Head of BBWS is needed. He added that there are currently three permanent provincial government pumps at Kuro with a total capacity of 6,000 litres per second. Two pumps from the Brantas River Basin Office total 2,000 litres per second, Lamongan Regency pumps have a capacity of 500 litres per second, and one mobile pump at 500 litres per second.

“All of this, plus the Melik 11 cubic metres, brings the total to a certain level. Ideally we would have 50 cubic metres, but what we have if not operated would result in higher water levels. The generator is expected to be converted to electricity in May so there will be no issues with fuel, noise from the generator, or a broken unit, in addition to plans for Waduk Jabung and Bendungan Karangnongko to address both floods and droughts,” he added.

Lamongan Regent Yuhronur Efendi added that to optimise the floodway, the Lamongan Regency Government will continue to communicate with various parties. “What Mr Emil said is about short-term steps we can take today to facilitate water release here. We will report on effectiveness later. As a reminder, we are also approaching a long dry season, so everything must be anticipated in a balanced way,” he concluded.
