Surabaya (ANTARA) - The East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Jatim) has established Resilient Disaster Villages (Destana) in 38 districts and cities as an effort to enhance community capacity and preparedness in facing potential disasters.

The Head of Prevention and Preparedness Division (PK) of BPBD Jatim, Deni Kiki Melia Tamara, stated in Surabaya on Wednesday that the establishment of Destana began in the Mataraman region, starting from Tulungagung Regency, Magetan, Trenggalek, to Madiun Regency and City.

“In addition, in Tulungagung, the Destana establishment was carried out in Panjerejo Village, Rejotangan Subdistrict. Meanwhile, in Magetan, the Destana activities focused on Jabung Village, Panekan Subdistrict,” she said.

She explained that the formation of Destana is part of BPBD Jatim’s efforts to increase the capacity and preparedness of communities in their areas against potential disasters.

“As directed by Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa through the Head of BPBD Jatim, preparedness is the top priority at every level of society. Destana is one form of concrete steps from the government to the community, to build a society that is ready, responsive, and resilient against every disaster threat,” she stated.

“For Trenggalek, the Destana establishment targets Timahan Village, Kampak Subdistrict. In Madiun Regency, the Destana is located in Nglanduk Village, Wungu Subdistrict, and in Madiun City, the activity targets Patihan Ward, Manguharjo Subdistrict,” she added.

She mentioned that in every Destana establishment, BPBD Jatim also provides assistance of 100 productive tree saplings, such as durian, avocado, longan, and water guava saplings.

“This sapling assistance is expected to serve as vegetative mitigation for the local village, with benefits that can also be felt economically by the surrounding residents,” she said.

She added that during the implementation, several materials are provided to Destana participants, ranging from an introduction to the importance of Destana, Disaster Risk Assessment, to Disaster Management Planning.
