A woman in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, is suspected of stealing condolence money. The woman is believed to have carried out similar thefts at least three times.

“Yes, exactly the same as the two previous incidents,” said AKP Fadoli, head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Kramat Jati Police, as reported by Antara on Thursday (5 March 2026).

Police revealed the same perpetrator had carried out the act at least twice in different areas, with a modus operandi of feigning mourning. Therefore, the suspect has committed the act three times in total.

The perpetrator in the Kramat Jati case is identical to the two previous incidents. “Yes, indeed, the case and the perpetrator are the same,” he said.

Two prior incidents occurred on Jalan Damai, Lubang Buaya, on 22 December 2025, and on Jalan Bambu Kuning, Bambu Apus, on 4 February 2026.

Modus: Feigning Mourning

In all three events, the suspect is believed to have used the same pattern, targeting funeral homes and exploiting bereavement to carry out the thefts. Based on preliminary investigations, the suspect arrived at the funeral home pretending to know the deceased’s family.

She then mingled with other mourners to avoid suspicion. When the situation was lax, the suspect is believed to have taken condolence money collected from guests.

Investigators are still gathering additional evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements at the three locations. The similarity in physical characteristics and modus operandi forms a strong basis that the perpetrator is the same person.

Police are also exploring the possibility of other victims who have not yet reported. Members of the public who believe they have experienced a similar incident are urged to report it promptly so it can be processed further.

“We are still conducting investigations and delving deeper,” she said.

The latest case occurred on Jalan Dukuh IV, Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The suspect took advantage of the busy funeral home environment.

“She carried out the act by pretending to be acquainted with the bereaved family and then blending with other mourners,” he said.

When distracted, the woman took condolence money and placed it into her own bag. She stole condolence money after claiming to use the toilet.

“While she was distracted, the perpetrator took the condolence money that had been pocketed, placed it into her bag and fled,” he said.
