East Jakarta Mayor Discusses Ciliwung River's Past as a Dumpsite, Urges Residents to Clean Up

East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin stated that there are currently still few environmental activists actively working to preserve the Ciliwung riverbank area. He made the remarks while opening the Condet Ciliwung Festival in Balekambang, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Saturday. He expressed appreciation for the community led by Ahmad Maulana, known as Bang Lantur, which has been actively maintaining the Ciliwung River area. “I hope more residents will be inspired to join Bang Lantur in promoting environmental awareness, especially along the Ciliwung River,” he said. Munjirin noted that the habit of residents dumping rubbish into the Ciliwung is gradually changing, a shift he credited to the role of environmental groups. He also reminded the public about the implementation of Gubernatorial Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the waste segregation movement. Starting 1 August, the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant will only accept residual waste, requiring residents to sort their waste from home. Organic waste can be processed through biopores or composters, while inorganic waste and hazardous materials can be channelled through waste banks. “If all residents or neighbourhood units implement this, I am confident we will see the Ciliwung River no longer become a dumping ground, but a beautiful place for us and future generations to enjoy,” he concluded.
