East Jakarta intensifies enforcement against illegal parking
Jakarta — East Jakarta’s Transportation Sub-Department is intensifying enforcement actions against vehicles parked illegally or haphazardly, including along Jalan Matraman Raya, specifically in front of the East Jakarta Metro Police Station.
“We must continue to take enforcement measures in coordination with our colleagues in the Police at the location so that everything there is orderly and there are no more haphazard parking spots at the location,” said Harlem Simanjuntak, Head of the East Jakarta Transportation Sub-Department, at the Office of the East Jakarta Mayor on Thursday.
He explained that this measure is being taken to create traffic order and prevent congestion caused by vehicles parked haphazardly on the road. According to Harlem, monitoring and enforcement will continue to ensure that no vehicles park illegally in areas where no-parking and no-stopping signs have been installed.
The area around the East Jakarta Metro Police Station is already equipped with traffic signs prohibiting vehicles from parking or stopping on the road. In the vicinity there are several public service facilities such as a health centre, police office, post office and a market that are frequently visited by residents.
However, Harlem emphasised that tolerance is only given to vehicles that do not violate the signs that have been set. If a vehicle is found to be parked in an area clearly prohibited, officers will not hesitate to take enforcement action.
“If they park outside the signs that have already been determined, that can still be tolerated. But those that clearly violate it, law enforcement is carried out,” he said.
Residents with business in the area are asked to make use of the parking facilities already available in the vicinity. There are several buildings and market areas that provide parking space so the public does not need to park their vehicles on the road or on the pavement.
He appealed to the public not to park on the road or pavement as the location is prohibited for parking. “Please park in places that have already been provided such as buildings or market areas that have parking space,” he said.
Previously, a video went viral on Instagram (@ijooel) showing vehicles parked on the edge of Jalan Matraman Raya, specifically in front of the East Jakarta Metro Police Station. In the recording circulating, several vehicles were seen using half the road to park despite no-parking signs being present. The video shows a row of vehicles parked along Jalan Matraman Raya, ranging from in front of the East Jakarta Health Sub-Department building to the Jatinegara Market area. Despite no-parking signs being visible at the location, several motorcycles and cars were also seen parked on the pavement, obstructing pedestrians passing through.
