East Jakarta Illegal Dumpsite Where Firefighter Died Begins Waste Removal

The DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency has begun transporting waste from an illegal dumpsite in Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, after a fire at the site resulted in the death of a firefighter. The site is planned to be permanently closed.

“Yesterday the focus was on extinguishing the fire, today we have started transporting the waste,” said Yogi Ikhwan, Head of Public Relations for the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, when contacted on Monday (3/8/2026).

Yogi said the waste removal is targeted for completion this week. He stated that the process will take four to five days. “Yesterday the focus was on extinguishing the fire, so we could only transport waste from the edges that were already extinguished. But after the fire was out, we went all out. So, God willing, everything will be cleared in the next four to five days,” he said.

The Head of the DKI Jakarta Communication, Information, and Statistics Agency, Marulina Dewi, said the land had frequently been used as an illegal dumping site, leading to a buildup of waste in the area. The waste at the location will be removed. “In line with the post-fire handling, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency will carry out waste removal in stages,” said Marulina Dewi in a statement quoted on Monday (3/8/2026).

In the first phase, the agency will remove waste in areas that are safe and unaffected by the fire. The next phase will continue in the area affected by the fire once it is declared safe by the DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency.

To prevent repeated illegal dumping, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will tighten supervision during the waste removal process. Parties found dumping waste at the illegal site will also face sanctions.

The illegal dumpsite caught fire on Saturday (1/8) at around 07:02 Western Indonesian Time. A firefighter named Andriyono died in the incident after complaining of feeling unwell while on duty. Andriyono was known to be the Head of the Cepu Group Unit for the Cipayung Sector.
